When I think about professional sports and which player and/or position seems to be the most intimidating, I always conclude that hands down, ice hockey goalies are the most intimidating players. They literally look like monsters with their giant pads and fiercely decorated masks. Getting into the opponent's head can and does create an advantage for the goalie.
They used to do that back in the days of leather football helmets, but with the speed and physicality of the game today, you would be walking in bad shape without a facemask.
Across the NHL, players, fans and media all felt it was a poor decision on Plante's part.
Wearing the mask not only would block his vision and affect his play, but it made him look like he was afraid, and had people questioning his toughness.
Talk about tough love, and especially for a goalie who was on his way to winning his fifth straight Vezina Trophy as the best in the league. Plante came back out on to the ice stitched up, but with a mask covering his face.
He had found his excuse to wear a mask during a game, and never looked back.
